The surge arrester (SA) work normally as an open switch. Normally there is no current on the SA. When an extremly high voltage ocure on the line or cable the SA works automaticly as a closed switch and enable to connection between energized with extremly high voltage line to ground, thus the high voltage make less damages to the protected equipment as transformer or cables.
